Over the past few decades, the process industry has replaced mechanical safeguards with networked microprocessor-based devices that can be configured remotely. The new systems have more functionality their analog counterparts; however, they have also created greater risk from cyber attack. By focusing on hazard and operability studies (HAZOPs) designated scenarios, it is possible to identify hackable scenarios, rank them appropriately, and design non-hackable safeguards--such as relief valves and current overload relays--that are not vulnerable to the cybersecurity threat vector. Where inherently secure safeguard design is not feasible, the appropriate cybersecurity countermeasures must be deployed. The first step in this decision-making process is the application of a methodology for assessing the potential risks posed by a cyberattack on these process plants. In the process industries, the most widely accepted process for identifying hazards and assessing risk is the process hazard analysis (PHA) method, most commonly performed through a HAZOP. This book reviews the most common methods for PHA of process industry plants and then explains how to supplement those methods with an additional security PHA review (SPR) study to determine if there are any cyberattack vectors that can cause significant physical damage to the facility. If these attack vectors are present, then the study methodology makes one of two recommendations: (1) modify one or more of the safeguards so that they are not vulnerable to cyberattack or (2) prescribe the appropriate degree of cyberattack safeguarding through the assignment of an appropriate security level. SPR examples provide insight for implementing these recommendations. Over the past few decades, the process industry has replaced mechanical safeguards with networked microprocessor-based devices that can be configured remotely. The new systems have more functionality their analog counterparts; however, they have also created greater risk from cyber attack.

With the release of the ISA-TR84.00.07 technical report on performance-based design of fire and gas detection systems for process industries, risk-based techniques for detector placement have become prevalent in fire and gas system (FGS) design. While the technical report addresses designing the FGS based on the user's risk profile and performance requirements, it does not provide any guidance on implementing the FGS lifecycle. This handbook provides a thorough overview of the FGS design lifecycle presented in the technical report, with an examination of each phase of the lifecycle and the practical activities required to develop an FGS design. In addition to discussing the design process, this handbook also provides valuable appendices that contain data for FGS system risk analysis, FGS risk grading procedures, and a discussion of the FGS mapping techniques used to verify the achievement of the newly defined coverage targets.

To run efficiently and cost effectively as well as produce quality products, manufacturing control systems on the plant floor must be able to communicate with the enterprise systems. Materials must be purchased and delivered on time, personnel must be scheduled, equipment must be available and operating properly, recipes must be precise, processes must be tracked, and product quality must be monitored so that changes can be made--all in real time. The problem is this: each system in the process speaks a different language. The ISA-95 Enterprise Control System Integration series of standards is a guide for creating the interfaces needed to bridge the language gap. It provides consistent terminology for the phases and steps throughout the supply and manufacturing processes and models for implementing the interfaces. The book, Second Edition, explains how to use the principles, terminology, and information methods in the standard to integrate enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and manufacturing operations management (MOM) systems. It provides examples and step-by-step plans for integration projects as well as case studies describing the implementation methods used by companies in different industries.Specific topics include: Applying ISA-95 to determine a specific company's MOM/MES strategyApplying the ISA-95 object modelsDeveloping MES applications and databasesCompiling user requirementsDescribing functional requirementsSelecting vendorsAnalyzing and comparing capacities at different production sitesGaining insight into and optimizing production processesThe authors discuss ISA-95 in the broader context of modern information exchange technologies and offer a complete picture for project managers, consultants, programmers, and information architects who want to integrate ERP and MOM/MES systems based on the international standard.
In recent years, there has been a lot of talk in the manufacturing industry about digital transformation and data-driven manufacturing. But many companies struggle with how to implement data-driven manufacturing and how to achieve digital transformation. Many companies have implemented a team that supports a digital transformation called a Center of Excellence or CoE. But what are they achieving excellence at?In his first book, MES: An Operations Management Approach (co-authored with Thomas Seubert), Vokey discussed using MES to support data-driven manufacturing as part of a company's digital transformation. In this book author discusses the characteristics of manufacturing that make data-driven manufacturing the right management decision. He discusses building a CoE, developing the skills needed to achieve digital transformation, and taking the transformation beyond the manufacturing floor.
This book and the accompanying workbook were designed to help manufacturing operations management (MOM) practitioners and students understand how to implement and utilize manufacturing execution systems (MES) to optimize data collection and review, improve process efficiency, and ensure/improve product quality to achieve the desired return on investment.Industry veterans explain the interactions of the key elements-MES, ERP (enterprise resource planning), and PLM (product life cycle management)-of MOM and how MES contributes to a streamlined process that produces quality products. This book discusses the potential for MES to drive real-time, data-driven performance improvement by expanding on the following concepts:
How the MES application supports operations planning, analysis, and reporting
How MES identifies quality issues and provides the data needed to determine the causes and resolve the problems
The full scope of MES planning and implementation and its impact on manufacturing operations
Designing, configuring, and implementing MES systems
IT concepts related to MES and how they apply to manufacturing operations
How MES can be applied to IIoT
How MES data can be used for continuous improvement
Independent learners and engineering students can use the text and workbook to reinforce their knowledge of the terminology and the functionality of the systems, models, and standards that support manufacturing operations. Industrial engineering instructors can use the set as a foundation for courses on manufacturing and the data structures required to support manufacturing.

More than half of all injection molded plastic parts can be produced more cost-effectively and with better tolerances using foam injection molding compared to traditional compact injection molding. For the part designer, the focus is on the functionality of the molded part, not on the plastic-compatible design, which is precisely what compact injection molding requires. This book describes the necessary fundamentals of physical foam injection molding, clearly illustrated by means of detailed, industrially proven examples to show the technology's potential. Machine and mold technology are also explained in detail, and polymers suitable for the process are discussed. The focus is always on the question of whether the potential of physical foam injection molding has already been exhausted or whether it is emerging as a second standard process alongside compact injection molding. The experienced authors make it possible to look beyond the end of one's nose. The reader can see which plastic parts can be converted from compact to foam injection molding, and is encouraged to rethink the part design. With this book, specialists are able to examine an application for their own company and analyze it with regard to its economic implementation. However, the book also shows the clear limitations of this technology.
